A New Website

I've spent the last few days building a new website.  My old website was lovingly hand coded in html, was very fast and easy to maintain.  However it didn't have automated updating of the events block, a cool calendar or rss feeds.  Now I could have done all that by hand, or written some perl scripts to automate the process, but there are so many great content management systems (CMS) out there that I decided to use one. Last year I was thinking of, and am still thinking of, redoing the Forum for Storytelling in Wales' website.  It is currently using Plone, which is an excellent CMS but which needs to run in its own server, which makes hosting more expensive.  I looked around and my shortlist was WordPress or Drupal.  Wordpress is very popular, but is primarily a blogging tool, although moving towards a full CMS, whereas Drupal is a full CMS, and should make it easy to do directories of storytellers, event calendars, polls, etc, as the need arises, with the downside being a steeper learning curve.  For good or ill I've gone with Drupal.  It's overkill for my own site at the moment, but I didn't want to spend the time learning more than one CMS! Anyway, this blog should really be about storytelling, rather than technology, but I thought it might be interesting to someone else thinking about doing or re-doing their website.  In the future I hope to be able to have image galleries and mp3s up on the site, and eventually to sell CDs and books (if I produce any) right here. The next set of my ramblings should be about storytelling...
